Buying guide

Choosing the right teardrop.

A teardrop is a cozy bed on wheels with an outdoor galley out back. Light enough for nearly any vehicle and tough enough for forest roads, they’re made for spontaneous weekends in the Uintas and sunrise at Flaming Gorge.

    Off-road or on-road?

Off-road packages add lifted suspension, all-terrain tires and articulating hitches for washboard and slickrock. If you stick to pavement, a standard chassis saves weight and money.

  2. 02

    Galley and power

Look for a rear galley with a sink and fridge, plus solar and a lithium battery if you plan to stay off-grid for more than a night.

  3. 03

    Weight you can forget about

Most teardrops weigh under 2,000 lbs. You’ll barely notice it behind you — and you’ll fit into campsites big rigs can’t.
