About this pop-up
Most pop-ups are made for paved campgrounds. The Backtrack 10XT is made for the places you have to earn. Red Rock Outfitters gave it a lift kit with 15 inches of ground clearance, independent suspension with dual shocks, 31-inch all-terrain tires, skid plates and an articulating hitch that lets it follow your rig over ledges near Moab.
The layout is simple: a queen bed end, a full bed end and a dinette in the middle. The kitchen slides out the side so you can cook outside and keep the canvas clean. It runs off a 300-watt solar panel and a 200Ah lithium battery, with a compact diesel-style heater for cold desert nights.
At about 2,280 pounds, it is light enough for a midsize truck or a capable SUV. Throw a couple of kayaks on the roof rack and head for Flaming Gorge, or load bikes and chase dirt roads in the San Rafael Swell. Either way, you will sleep better than you would in a rooftop tent.
